Fishers snowplow drivers help military spouses clear snow

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) — As crews work to clear roads and neighborhoods of snow and ice that covered central Indiana on Saturday, one city is doing more than just salting and plowing.

For the fourth year in a row, snowplow drivers with the Fishers Department of Public Works are clearing driveways, sidewalks and steps for military spouses whose loved ones are deployed. 

It’s part of the city’s Hometown Help for Heroes initiative.

The snow is removed within 24 hours after it falls.

City officials said the extra bit of help continues throughout the person’s deployment. 

News 8 spoke to Fishers snowplow drivers who said being able to help these families with what might seem like a simple task means the world to them.  

“A lady came out and gave me a big hug, which, I like that because I know she appreciates it. It makes me feel very good that we are doing our part to show our appreciation for our armed service personnel. They would be doing it themselves, you know! We are just doing what we can to do our part to show our appreciation,” said David Stafford with Fishers Department of Public Works. 

The help doesn’t stop there.

The city also helps military families in the summer months by mowing lawns and helping landscape and trim trees. 

This program is currently looking for families who qualify that they can help out.
