New spa incorporating salt opens in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) –  New to the Indy area, a very different spa experience recently opened and the main component is salt.

It’s called Indy Salt Cave and it uses polish salt rocks to help people heal. It’s all about a holistic approach to health. Salt like this is utilized across the world, especially in Europe, but are only now gaining popularity here in the United States.

At the Indy Salt Cave, you can take a sauna or try their hand and foot detox. All of it said to heal the mind and body.

The building itself is an old firehouse with a long history. Inside the cave itself, the walls are lined with 12 tons of salt rocks. The floor is covered with salt.

Through the inhalation of salt particles and contrary to popular belief, salt does not dry out mucus. It actually allows a person to breathe better. Salt softens the mucus and increases the efficiency of the cleaning of the respiratory tract. It also works as a general anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-fungal.

Breathing the air inside the cave can help with everything like common allergies to COPD, emphysema, cystic fibrosis and even depression or anxiety.

Co-owner Danny Spiczenski says they have seen the popularity of similar caves in other parts of the world and wanted to bring it to Hoosiers.

“Back in the 1800s, the polish salt miners who were in the mines everyday they never got sick.” said Spiczenski. “So, there’s a lot of research and curiosity of why they’re not getting sick. They’re living longer, they have youthful skin and they’re not getting sick, which is very odd. So, they linked all this to the polish salt mines, so we recreated the micro-climate of a cave.”

The Indy Salt cave is open and has monthly memberships as well as individual trips. Spiczenski says they are looking to expand to include meditation sessions as well as yoga, with plans to eventually expand outside, too.

Add a trip to the Fort Harrison State Park Inn, a round of golf, a walk around the state park and you could make a great staycation for yourself.
