Teen charged as adult in shoe deal ending with 28-year-old shot dead
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Marion County prosecutors said Tuesday a 17-year-old boy will be charged with murder as an adult in the shooting of a 28-year-old man.
Toney Lamont Hodges was scheduled to be formally charged Thursday as a adult with murder, robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, attempted armed robbery, carrying a handgun without a license and dangerous possession of a firearm, according to court documents.
Prosecutors said the 15-year-old boy arrested in the case will be charged as a juvenile.
The two boys were arrested in connection to the October shooting death of John Beasley Jr., 28, in his car in an apartment complex parking lot, police said. Beasley as found shot in a silver 2003 Honda Accord car in the 3500 block of Star Magnolia Place at the Villages of Mill Crossing apartments around 5:53 p.m. Oct. 16. The apartments are northwest of the intersection of 38th Street and North Sherman Drive. Beasley was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Court documents said police found “a relatively large amount of suspected marijuana” and “a small amount of suspected heroin” among other items in the car.
Both boys told police they had planned to either rob or exchange marijuana from someone who replied to an ad on an app to buy basketball footwear, court documents said. At Hodges’ home, police issued a search warrant and collected a black and white pair of Nike Jordan shoes, which Hodges told police he had offered for sale on the app. Police also found a Ruger .380 auto handgun in a backpack that also had the 17-year-old’s homework with his name on it.
The coroner said Beasley died of homicide by multiple gunshot wounds.
