MONTICELLO, Ind. (WANE) - Indiana Conversation Officers said a vehicle reported stolen in 2004 was found by divers in Lake Shafer on Thursday.
According to the DNR, Indiana Conservation Officers and the Monticello Fire Department were conducting SCUBA/Sonar training in Lake Shafer when they found the car, a 1992, red, Chevrolet Camaro, with a black convertible top.
The SCUBA divers were working on underwater search patterns in “black water” while surface support personnel were utilizing a new sonar unit, according to officials.
The sonar operators saw what they believed was a possible sunken boat trailer in the lake. When divers located the article to remove it from the lake, they discovered the vehicle, which was submerged in about eight feet of water.
The vehicle was reported as stolen to the White County Sheriff’s Department in February 2004.
The sonar unit was recently purchased by the White County Prosecutor’s Office to be used by emergency personnel to help locate missing items underwater. The sonar unit is a Humminbird 1198C GPS Side Imaging System, which provides quality pictures of items under the water.
