INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - More than 125 firefighters in 54 units fought a four-alarm building fire on the city's southeast side Sunday night and into Monday morning.
Firefighters were battling the fire near Van Buren Street and South State Avenue. They were called to the scene shortly after 9 p.m. The fire was brought under control around 1:37 a.m. Monday.

The fire quickly became a two-alarm fire, which happened about 7 minutes after crews arrived. It was upgraded to a three-alarm fire around 10:12 p.m. Shortly before 11 p.m., it was upgraded to a four alarm. The Emergency Operations Center was activated.
According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, the fire was in an old, vacant warehouse, believed to be the site of a former manufacturing company. A sign on the building says Holcomb & Hoke MFG Co. The building is 160,000 square feet, IFD says.

One firefighter, a 25-year-veteran, suffered a slight injury. That person was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital for heat exhaustion and was released early Monday morning.
Area homes evacuated
IMPD's ERG Squad was on the scene assisting with search and evacuation operations. All residents were encouraged to cooperate with IMPD.
According to IFD, about 15 homes on Legrande Avenue were evacuated. Those homes were south of the fire. The evacuation was a precautionary measure. The fire had shut down power to some houses in the area. IPL was working to get power restored to those homes.
Fire officials say the flying embers from the fire started a small field fire to the west of the building. Fire had also spread to a building south of where the fire started.
Around 10:30 p.m., IFD reported there was a partial collapse to the building.
Streets close around warehouse fire; reopened 12 hours later
The fire caused streets in an eight block radius to close. Those streets reopened around 9 a.m. Monday. The following roads were closed Sunday night and early Monday morning:
- State Street, north from East Raymond Street to East Legrande Avenue
- East Legrande, west from East Raymond
- Also, smaller streets off of Legrande Avenue
Large number of crews respond
According to a release, 53 IFD units and one Speedway fire unit responded to the fire. There were 10 aerial ladders, 13, engines, two squads and 29 support/command staff battled the fire. An IFD fuel truck was also called to the scene to re-fuel some of the fire engines.
IMPD officers spend a large portion of Sunday night and Monday morning on the scene directing traffic away from the area. IEMS was also on the scene.
The estimated damage was not available Monday morning. The fire is under investigation.
