SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - A problem with the chip/seal project on 252 between I-65 and Flat Rock in Shelby County has drivers upset that their tires are getting gooey asphalt and stone stuck in them.
They are also complaining the wet roadway is doing a number on their paint jobs and even windshields.
"You're stuck on it, there's no place to go," says John Bryant.
Bryant lives off 700 near Flat Rock and pulled over to tell us how upset he was that his nearly new Ford F-150 truck had to drive over roads that were untreated.
He described where the asphalt kicked up and stuck to his car: "down the side, on the running board, all the way down the side of it.
He points out sticky asphalt and stones that have marked up his truck, and he's not the only one who noticed that this project which is part of INDOT's 2014 plan was not going well.
"We came out this afternoon and ran into some things that weren't typical of our chip and seal operations," said INDOT's Gary Vandergriff.
Vandergriff is the Highway Director for Johnson County and says INDOT did receive some complaints Wednesday from drivers about the roadwork. That's why a team of engineers and materials specialists were out all day, trying to figure out what went wrong.
"We've suspended operations until we can look into it a little bit more," says Vandergriff.
He and his team will be out again Thursday morning, until they can figure out a fix for the problem. Meanwhile they had broom trucks out Wednesday afternoon trying to get as much excess stone off the road as possible.
INDOT is also asking drivers to watch their speed in that area to try and minimize any damage to their cars.
"I feel the state should pay for any damage that occurs to the vehicle for their ignorance," said Bryant.
