SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Shelbyville shooting victim Ryan Rooks says if he had been standing a few inches more to the right, he could have been killed Saturday night.
"I got lucky, really lucky. It could have been a lot worse than what it was. Luckily it wasn't one of my kids or my wife. I'm glad it was me instead," said Rooks.
Rooks lives in an upstairs apartment on Harrison Street. He says late Saturday night he heard shots being fired outside and noticed someone standing in his driveway. That's when he opened the window to find out what was going on.
"I said, ‘What's going on, what's all the noise about?' That's when he said, ‘Get out of the window' and shot me," said Rooks.
Rooks says the bullet passed through the outside wall of the apartment building, grazed his right thigh, and then lodged in the kitchen wall.
Dawson was still in critical condition at IU Health Methodist Hospital on Monday.
Also on Monday, the Shelbyville Police Department released the names of the officers involved in the shooting: Officer Kris Fewell, a 12-year veteran of the department; Officer Jeremy O'Conner, a three-year veteran; and Officer Kyle Henderson, a two-year veteran.
SPD Chief Keith England said because of the ongoing investigation into the shooting by Indiana State Police, there would be no further comment from the officers or department at this time.
