ANDERSON, Ind. (WISH) - Police in Anderson are investigating after more than one gram of heroin was discovered inside an elementary school.
Investigators do not know how it got inside Erskine Elementary School in Anderson.
Parents told 24-Hour News 8 they were disappointed with how the school handled the situation.
One mother, who asked not to be identified, said she called the school for answers after noticing a strong police presence and search dogs.
"They lied to us about everything about the whole situation,” the woman said, who has a son in the fifth-grade. “It was like six or seven police officers with K-9s. I called inside and they said it was just a drill."
Administrators locked the school down for several hours and suspended classes while police investigated the incident and searched the school for more drugs.
Antonio Smith, who has a son in first-grade and daughter in fifth-grade at Erskine, keeps a picture from his children's first day of school this year on his cellphone. The thought of something happening to them hurts.
"That could have been one of my kids that got a hold of that,” Smith said. “It is just a shame that something like that enter the school building."
Police examined that surveillance video but haven't been able to determine how the drugs got there.
