BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) - Indiana University is the latest organization to publicly state it opposes efforts to amend the state Constitution to define marriage as strictly between a man and a woman.
“If the state is suggesting that it is closing its doors to individuals because of the choices they make, because of the lifestyle they have, (that is) something that is inconsistent with (IU’s) values and it is something that will hurt (IU) in terms of employment,” said James Wimbush, IU Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs.
The university has joined Freedom Indiana, a bipartisan grassroots campaign launched this summer to oppose the amendment. Other members include major businesses and organizations like Eli Lilly, Cummins Inc., and the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce.
“It shows that the continued momentum we've had since we first came out as a campaign against this amendment,” said Freedom Indiana spokesperson Megan Robertson. “I think we will hear from several more businesses, potentially some additional universities I think will be joining on. I think it goes to show there is a lot of momentum to say this amendment is unnecessary."
It appears Purdue University won’t be backing Freedom Indiana. The university appears to be staying neutral on the issue.
“Over the years, Purdue has traditionally declined to comment on social issues that have been contended in the public arena. Any departure from this policy should be undertaken only after careful consultation with the university’s many and diverse stakeholders," said Julie Griffith, Vice President of Public Affairs, Purdue University
At Ball State University, a spokesperson says the faculty council has been asked to consider the issue and determine how it can be addressed.
