INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Wednesday, an Indianapolis board, the Board of Public Works, will vote on the mayor's proposal for the "World Sports Park."
That's the place that became famous when a newspaper in India reported Mayor Ballard's desire to see cricket played there.
Right now, it's the Post Road Community Park, on the east side of Indianapolis. But, with the investment of about $5 million, the park could be suitable as a site for tournaments in games that have an international following -- even if we don't know them well.
Mayor Ballard says it represents the increasingly global nature of Indianapolis.
"There's obviously a return to the city and I think there potentially could be a return to the city on some of this investment."
Critics have complained that money for the park is coming from the Rebuild Indy fund. That's the account that came from the city's transfer of its utilities to Citizens Energy.
At least one council member said, with other infrastructure needs, this is the wrong place to spend that money.
But, Ballard told 24-Hour News 8 the park represents infrastructure, too.
