INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - People living on the near eastside of Indianapolis are joining forces against crime. The latest crime, a garage burglary in the Emerson Heights neighborhood, was caught on tape.
On the idyllic Wallace Avenue in Emerson Heights, a neighbor sits on the same porch he has for over half a century.
"We didn't believe in locking doors. We didn't have problems in those days."
But times have changed. Doors are locked and thieves are breaking windows.
"We went out and sure enough the garage was empty!"
It's the latest crime to hit the Emerson Heights and Irvington Terrace neighborhoods; the latest of many.
"It goes in spurts and lately, in the last two weeks, it's been wild," said another resident.
Two young men broke out a small garage window and for a half hour stole tools it took a lifetime to acquire.
"Routers and drills and sanders...they used my trash barrel and emptied it on the floor and put everything, all the tools and things, in that and moved out."
It's crime like this that has fueled residents' determination to stand their ground and protect their neighborhoods.
"Our first crime watch meeting, when the sheriff asked how many people did you have on your list, I said about 200 and they said expect about 20 to show up and we had about 400 show up."
The crime watch has grown to thousands now and these thieves are in their crosshairs.
"My hope is that every neighbor can stay vigilant and catch these people and show them that it's just not going to happen here, you know, you're going to have to find somewhere else to go."
There's a reason these residents stay. They want criminals to know there's a reason they need to leave.
"They'll have to pay a price one of these days."
