INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - City officials released new information Wednesday on the sinkhole that still has River Road on the north side closed.
Engineers from DPW say the hole isn't a sinkhole, but rather is there because of erosion after heavy rains. The hole caused damage to four cars. It's about 4 feet wide and 8 feet deep. DPW spokeswoman Lesley Gordon says erosion in the bridge that supports the asphalt was actually discovered earlier.
"So we had plans already underway to make that repair. But with all that rain that we have gotten in April, it built up and that problem escalated to the subgrade, which caused the asphalt and everything under there to shift down and cause the hole," she says.
Contractors are now checking the damage and submitting bids to fix it. Gordon says it should be a relatively quick fix. But until it's done the road will remain closed.
Four cars were damaged Tuesday night as a result of the hole in the road.
