INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - One resident and one firefighter were slightly injured in a stubborn house fire early Friday near Southport Road and South Madison Ave.
Extra fire companies had to be called as flames shot thru the roof of the three-story residence at 185 South Street.
One of the residents had some breathing difficulties and was taken to St. Francis Hospital for treatment.
Four other residents were not hurt. One firefighter was transported to Methodist Hospital for dehydration.
The fire was reported at 2:52 am. It was not until nearly 4:15 am that firefighters declared the blaze under control.
Preliminary reports indicate the fire started on the first level at the rear of the home and then progressed all the way through the roof. An exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
The three-story residence was broken up into apartments.
Fire officials at the scene say the structure looks to be a total loss.
Fire crews remain on the scene putting out hot spots.
Victims assistance was called to the scene to assist with finding shelter for the displaced residents.
