INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A notable Catholic website is reporting that Indianapolis Archbishop Daniel Buechlein's retirement will be announced Wednesday.
The Archdiocese of Indianapolis announced in a news release that it would have an "important announcement" on Tuesday, but did not give details.
Rocco Palmo of the Whispers in the Loggia blog , however, cited sources familiar with the situation as he reported that Buechlein, who suffered a stroke six months ago , "will announce the Pope's acceptance of his resignation on grounds of ill health."
Palmo also reports that Buechlein submitted his request to retire in August.
The Pope named Father Christopher Coyne auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese in January.
By appointing him auxiliary bishop, the Vatican signaled that Coyne will not necessarily be Buechlein's successor when he steps down, allowing more time to find the right fit to lead the more than 225,000 Catholics in central and southern Indiana.
Saturday morning, Wishard Memorial Hospital will close its doors.
Snow that moved through Central Indiana this week has wrapped up, leaving some areas with more than 10 inches of snow.
Free bags of salt will be available to the public Saturday after snow moved through Central Indiana this week.
