INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A woman jumped from a third floor balcony Friday night when the apartment complex she lives in caught fire.
The Indianapolis Fire Department responded to the 4100 block of Stonecrest Court around 10:45 p.m. to the Heritage Apartments.
Authorities said 14 units in the complex were affected by the fire – all residents were accounted for. Neighbors helped each other by knocking on doors, alerting everyone to get out of the building.
The woman who jumped was conscious and seen walking around afterward, according to IFD. Medics transported her to a hospital to be checked out. A man was also taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation.
Investigators said the fire started on the second floor. Flames spread to the third floor and out the roof through plumbing columns. It took crews 30 minutes to get the fire under control.
The cause is under investigation.
The federal government says nearly 3,500 Indiana residents chose a health insurance plan through the federally run online exchange during its first two months of operation.
A cooling system at a women's shelter near Community Hospital was stripped of copper early Tuesday morning.
