MORGAN COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - A Morgan County dad was in jail Monday because police said he confessed to murdering his 19-year-old son.
Morgan County Sheriff Robert Downing said 49-year-old David Carrender admitted to shooting and killing his son, Wyatt Carrender. The shooting happened Sunday evening inside Carrender's home in the 6600 block of Crooked Creek Drive. Police say the teen's girlfriend witnessed the shooting.
Neighbors heard the gunfire.
"I heard a series of 4-5 gunshots real quick," said Tony White, who lives across the street. "I heard what I assumed was the young boy's girlfriend scream. She was asking him (the father) why he had done it. She was just in terrible shape."
White said the Sunday argument was not the first time the father and son went head-to-head. White said his wife witnessed a similar scene earlier this summer.
"They got out in the yard and got to fighting , screaming. Someone was yelling, 'Put the gun away, put the gun away.' Nothing really happened after that incident. That blew over," said White.
Sheriff Downing says his investigators are looking into previous incidents where police were called out to the house but he did not have further details. Downing says alcohol appears to have played a role in the shooting.
"It appears at this time the father had been drinking during the day according to witness statements," said Downing.
An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday morning.
David Carrender was being held in jail Monday without bond.
