ZIONSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Zionsville school board members on Wednesday voted to put a referendum on the ballot again this spring, asking taxpayers for more money.
This request, though, will ask taxpayers for less money over less time than the one on the ballot in November 2010 did. It will still allow the school to add to its staff and reduce class sizes, though.
Board members chose the second of three proposals. That option, Zionsville Community Schools Superintendent Scott Robison explained in a meeting earlier this week, would cost about $4.7 million annually for three years, 24-Hour News 8 news partner the Zionsville Times Sentinel reported.
"The class sizes are lower," Robison said. "Science instruction returns. Reading coaching and improvement path returns. This option allows us to hire 14 additional teachers, five science specialists for the elementary level, two literacy specialists and five counselors for improvements in class sizes and services to students. The pay to play fees would remain at status quo."
The referendum will appear on the May ballot for Zionsville residents.
After the referendum failed in 2010, the school system was forced to cut 16 teachers and counselors. The funding crunch came after the state instituted property tax caps and changed the way public schools are funded.
