INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - One person was listed in critical condition at IU Health Methodist Hospital after being struck by a car Wednesday night on the city's east side.
The accident happened around 8:30 p.m. at 38th Street, just east of Hawthorne Lane.
Police say a 25-year-old man on a bike was heading eastbound on 38th Street when he was struck.
Officers say the vehicle took off but within minutes investigators found it blocks away at East 36th and Alsace Drive following another collision with an unoccupied parked car.
The driver was immediately apprehended. Officers suspect the driver may have consumed alcohol or other illegal intoxicant, according to a release sent out late Wednesday night.
Police say the driver has not yet been arrested but is likely to face preliminary charges after the investigation. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will then review the case.
Police asked that drivers avoid the area and seek an alternate route as East 38th Street between Hawthorne Lane and Butler Avenue would remain closed for an unknown amount of time.
