NEEDHAM, Ind. (WISH) - Two juveniles were preliminarily charged with arson Sunday after police say they started a corn field fire in Needham.
According to a press release, police responded to the 3500 block of North County Road 700 East for a fire in a corn field behind the Needham Fire Station. The witness asked police to talk to the occupants in a home near the station.
The two juveniles - ages 9 and 10 - told police they were in the field when it was set on fire. They said they were playing with a lighter, set a leaf of a corn stalk on fire and then the fire got out of control. They tried to put the fire out but were not able to do so and then ran out of the corn field.
They also told police it was not the first time they had played with fire.
Police say half of an acre of corn was destroyed.
