FRANKLIN, Ind. (WISH) - A Franklin man was hospitalized Sunday evening after police say he accidentally shot himself.
According to a police report, around 6:25 p.m., police responded to the 5400 block of Old Smith Valley Road for a report of someone accidentally shot. Police say a man, later identified as Martin Smith, 22, was shot in the right leg and toe.
Smith told police his mom called him to tell him one of his long-time friends was shot and killed Saturday night in Louisville. He was upset and went to grab his gun from his bedroom. He told police he knew who shot his friend and that he was planning to go to Louisville to get revenge. He grabbed the gun and as he put it in his waistband, he accidentally shot himself.
Medics arrived on the scene to treat Smith. As they were getting ready to take him to the hospital, he tried to get out of the ambulance. Police were able to calm him down after a scuffle and get him back into the ambulance.
Smith was taken to the hospital. The prosecutor will review the case to determine whether any charges are filed.
