PENDLETON, Ind. (WISH) - A visitor at the Pendleton Correctional Facility was arrested on drug trafficking charges Thursday afternoon, officials say.
According to a release from the jail, 25-year-old Cherkeeta Monai Bacon of Indianapolis was visiting the facility Thursday afternoon. When she left, the inmate she was visiting was found to be in possession of contraband.
Police believe Bacon hid the substance in a body cavity and passed it to the inmate inside of a latex glove.
Officials say the inmate, Floyd Tewell, swallowed the substance before it could be retrieved by staff. Tewell told officials that the substance was tobacco, although police say they have reason to believe the contraband was a drug.
Bacon was taken into custody and transported to the Madison County Jail.
Tewell was serving a life sentence for kidnapping. He was sentenced in Marion County in March of 1974.
