ERIE, Pa. (AP) — A county Democratic committee has kicked out a northwestern Pennsylvania city councilman because he's supporting a Republican colleague in the upcoming election.
Erie Councilman Mel Witherspoon tells the Erie Times-News (http://bit.ly/18KT8M3 ) he refused to resign and instead let himself be voted off the Erie County Democratic committee for violating bylaws with his public support of fellow councilman and longtime friend, John Evans.
Evans is the only Republican running for council on Nov. 5. Three other Democrat incumbents and another Democrat challenger are also on the ballot, meaning five candidates are vying for four council spots in a city where Republicans are seldom elected.
Witherspoon isn't up for re-election this year. Evans was appointed to fill a vacancy last year and is now running for a full four-year term.
Witherspoon says Evans is "highly qualified."
