ELWOOD, Ind. (WISH) - On Friday night, Elwood beat Alexandria 49-42 in a game senior Elwood running back Sammy Mireles will never forget.
With almost 350 yards and five touchdowns, he broke the Indiana career rushing record with 7,693 yards over his four year career.
“I always told myself when I was little I was going to break this record. And as I got older, I realized I was that much closer to getting it,” said Mireles. “Amazing accomplishment, I couldn't have done any of it without my line. God's kept me healthy all four years.
“This is the epitome of all the records. When you're talking about career rushing leader in the state of Indiana since they've been keeping records, so this is the big one,” said Elwood head football coach Marty Wells. “Perfect example of what hard work will do for you. He's got the greatest work ethic of any kid we've ever had.”
The previous record was set by Cathedral’s Otis Shannon from 1997-2000, who was on hand to witness Mireles set a new one.
