INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Panther Racing driver J.R. Hildebrand crashed early on in the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500.
Hildebrand drives the National Guard car. In the middle of Turn 1, his car did a quarter-spin and hit the SAFER Barrier. His car then slid sideways through the short chute.
Hildebrand climbed out of his car without assistance.
He appeared to be OK following the crash but was taken to the medical center. Hildebrand was checked out, and is cleared to drive.
