INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Offensive linemen don't expect to be famous. Their job is to protect people such as Andrew Luck. That's what Mike McGlynn does for the Indianapolis Colts.
He's also proven to be a 6'4", 327 pound guardian angel for a family in Shelbyville . 24-Hour News 8 told you their story on Monday.
On Black Friday, someone stole the little bit Matt and Lori Diehl planned to give their kids for Christmas. In the parking lot of a local store, Lori found someone had broken-in to her van "and everything was gone."
The following Sunday, McGlynn called the Diehls offering to replace what was stolen.
24-Hour News 8 caught up with McGlynn after Wednesday's practice. He credited his wife with bringing the story to him.
"It popped up on, like, her Gmail. She read it and brought it to me. After hearing that, he said, "I felt like we need to go and help them."
McGlynn said he knows a lot of families are struggling right now.
"Christmas could be tough," he said. He knows as a professional athlete he's in a much different position. "Anybody in this room doesn't struggle on Christmas," he said. So, to "give back to that family was a true blessing and [we're] glad we were able to do it."
When 24-Hour News 8 discussed this with the Diehls on Monday, they said the generosity they saw from McGlynn and from the Colts will be something they share with their children. It will be a lesson that, even in times of adversity, "there are good people out there."
"And, if you just turn everything over to God and just pray about things, somehow He will bring either people or things into your life that will be what you need to take care of everything. That lesson for our kids and for our family was probably the most amazing thing they could have given us, without even realizing they were doing that."
