The most important way to measure snow correctly is to measure it in the proper location. Here are some tips to help you get the most accurate snowfall measurement.

WHERE TO MEASURE:

• Measure snow in a location that doesn’t get snow drifts.
• Measure snow on a solid, level surface (measuring in grass will give you artificially high readings).
• Measure in 3 separate solid, level locations. Take the average of the readings.

WHEN TO MEASURE:

• You can measure snowfall as often as every hour, but to get the best total, try to measure as soon as it stops snowing (before melting and settling takes place).
• Only measure if half or more of your property has at least a thin coat of snow. If half the ground is bare, take a measurement in the snow area, and divide by 2. If less than half of your property is covered by a thin snow cover, report it as TRACE or 0.01 on the widget.

HOW TO REPORT SNOW MEASUREMENTS:

• Enter reports for daily snowfall totals. Our system will keep a running total of your snowfall if a snow event last more than one day.
• Report snow totals to the nearest tenth (0.1”) of an inch.
