Record race day heat possible today

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — If you are heading to the track today, be sure to find ways to keep yourself cool.

We’ve expected near record breaking heat across the state today, as our unusually warm May continues.  We’re starting the morning off dry around the metro, with a few storms in our far southern  counties – moving south.

In terms of rain, any chances for that happening will happen in the mid to late afternoon hours – and more than likely southwest of Indy.  That said, can’t rule out a rogue shower/storm – but the thinking is we should be fine for the race.

The big story today will be the heat.  Temperatures by green flag time will already be well into the 80s, with highs surging into the lower 90s by this afternoon.

We’re forecast a high of 92°, which would tie the record for the hottest race – set back in 1936. We’ve only cracked the 90s 6 times on race day, today should mark number 7.
