Strong storms possible Saturday, colder air to follow

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Our mild and windy weather pattern will come to a crashing halt, with the potential for strong storms along a cold front, Saturday.

Tonight:

A few showers have worked into central Indiana ahead of the main batch out to our west, but, overall, a majority of the area has been dry and that should remain the case for the rest of the evening. Mid to late evening temperatures will only fall to the middle 60s.

Winds will settle a bit, but certainly noticeably, with gusts from 20-25 mph at times.

Overnight, expect a shield of showers and a few thunderstorms to work into the area from the west and southwest. A few downpours will be possible.

Lows will dip to the lower 60s.

Saturday:

Much of central Indiana is under a marginal risk for severe storms, with a slight risk for some of our western counties. Main threat for severe storms will be the afternoon and evening hours, with damaging winds the primary concern.

We’ll be dealing with steady rain and storms for the morning, which should taper off by lunchtime.

Models indicate that there should be another round of developing storms out in Illinois by mid-afternoon, which charges into central Indiana by late afternoon and early evening. There remains some question on how quickly the atmosphere can recover and recharge after the morning activity, but it’s certainly worth noting that ingredients are there for a few strong storms across our area heading into the evening hours.

Meanwhile, temperatures will run mild again, with highs around 70.

Sunday:

We’ll see another dose of rain moving in well before daybreak, and continue through much of the morning into the afternoon.

While not severe, the potential for heavy rain and some isolated flooding issues will be of concern. Some areas will like pick up from 1 to 2 inches of rainfall for the weekend, with isolated higher amounts possible.

Temperatures will end much cooler, hovering in the lower to middle 50s

8 Day Forecast:

Some leftover precipitation for our weekend system could change over to snow for the Monday morning commute. No accumulation is expected. Highs will only hit the lower to middle 40s Monday. We’ll bounce back to the 50s Tuesday and 60s Wednesday, with another round of spotty showers possible for the midweek. Conditions look to dry out for the second half of the workweek, with near normal temperatures.
