How Dorothea Lange focused on photography to tell stories we know today

If you don’t know the name Dorothea Lange, you may have seen her work at the very least. She was a photographer who traveled the country during the Great Depression today.

She worked for the federal government in the 1930s and 1940s and later went on to have her own photography studio.

“I think that she truly engaged with the people that she was photographing and understood the fact that photography was in a photograph. A single image was the start of a story, and for each person that she was interacting with, she documented their lives and their experiences. It was part of a larger narrative,” Jessica Nelson, the director of religion and culture initiatives at the Eiteljorg Museum, said.
