Community Link: Breast cancer risk factors and symptoms

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Each week in Community Link Carolene Mays-Medley and Marco Dominguez take a look at an organization or business that is making a positive impact on the community.

This week Mays-Medley spoke with renowned breast surgeon Dr. Monet Bowling about the top risk factors and symptoms of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death in women.

Bowling said it’s important for women to be aware of their family medical history when considering risk factors for breast cancer.

“Other things that are very important is if a woman has had children…using hormone replacement therapy puts you at an increased risk for developing breast cancer,” said Bowling. “When your cycles end as a whole, the longer exposure you have to estrogen puts you at risk for developing breast cancer.”

She also talked about the importance of breast cancer screenings.
