Community Link: Community safety

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — On this week’s edition of Community Link, we sat down with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Candy Perry to discuss community safety for the holidays.

What is the mayor concern for IMPD during a month of December?

One of the major concerns of course is safety. Safety of the community, their children, the businesses and we want to make sure people are doing things that are keeping them safe.

How is IMPD handling the diversity of cultures within the city?

The beautiful thing is that it is diverse, and it is growing and becoming even more beautiful in many different ways. It is a challenge many times because of the cultural differences and understanding the laws and how things work here in Indianapolis, but the way we are handling that is we’re reaching out to more officers. The officers are getting out of their cars more, they’re getting involved in more community events, and giving tips, and giving people information, helping people understand how we do things.

Any activities planned for the month of December?

We have some officers with the community engagement office that are doing things like Clothe a Child that are feeding people. We are having events where we are having can drives and coat drives so people cannot only give but they can also receive. They can come to the districts and see what we have, children getting toys and stuffed animals. The more involvement in the actual meetings, things like knowing how to lock your car not keeping it running, making sure that if you’re keys are in there you keep a close eye in your car because we have a lot of car theft, due to things that can be prevented.
