Community Link: Indiana Minority Health Coalition

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — On this week’s edition of Community Link, we discuss the minority communities in our area that have difficulty in accessing health services.

Indiana Minority Health Coalition President Carl Ellison dropped by our studios to discuss some of these issues.

What exactly does the IMHC do in the state of Indiana?

We’re a 22-year-old statewide non-profit with local chapters around the state. We provide a lot of health education, research and public policy.

What are some of the initiatives the coalition is leading throughout the state?

What we’ve done in the past and what we’ll do in the future is start with a 211 database and say what services on that database are offered in Spanish. We then shop these services if that’s authentic and add additional services we want to put in the directory.

Talk to us about the upcoming conference that discusses men’s health.

Each year, IMHC tries to do a luncheon and we’d bring focus to a health concern. Men are notorious for wanting to avoid health providers so we’re going to start with a morning symposium. We’ll have sessions that will address mental health and various areas of men’s health concerns.
