‘Gr8 Comeback’: Strange Bird tiki bar offers ‘tropical escape’ in Irvington

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH)– A tiki bar in Irvington has a name that might grab your attention: Strange Bird.

Owner Neal Warner says he wants customers to look at a visit to his bar and restaurant as a getaway experience.

“We like to make it feel kind of like a tropical escape,” he said. “We walk in here and you’re on the east side of Indianapolis and you walk in and you feel like you’re transported somewhere.”

Warner talked about what he believes are the highlights of the Strange Bird menu, including a twist to a Hoosier favorite: coconut-crusted tenderloin.

“It’s kind of an island take on a Hoosier classic,” he said.

Other highlights: the Painkiller cocktail, the Saturn — a gin cocktail with passion fruit — and the Poke Fries, a ribbon potato nacho that includes salmon, soy and avocado.

  • Strange Bird current hours:
    • Thursday-Saturday 5-10 p.m.
    • Sundays: 5-9 p.m.

Strange Bird is currently hosting outdoor dining only.
