Witness one of the greatest films of the 20th century on the biggest screen and in a completely new way!

“2001: A Space Oddysey” is a science fiction masterpiece directed and produced by Stanley Kubrick from a screenplay he co-wrote with legendary science fiction author, Arthur C. Clarke. It was originally released on April 4, 1968, igniting the imaginations of both critics and audiences and starred Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood. With the film, Kubrick redefined the limits of movie-making and cemented his legacy as one of the most revolutionary and influential motion picture directors of all time. Craig Mince, Theater Director at the IMAX Theatre at the Indiana State Museum, announces the 15/70mm “unrestored” release to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original release to allow fans to recreate the experience audiences experienced fifty years ago. The 70mm print of the film was created by Warner Bros. using printing elements made directly from the film’s original negative. This means the film has been “unrestored” with no digital tricks, remastered effects, or revisionist edits. The 70mm recreation will also allow audiences to get a completely immersive experience by viewing the film on the largest screen in the state of Indiana with 12,000 watts of digital surround sound. 

The downtown Indy IMAX will be one of only five theaters across North America to receive a 15/70mm print of the film. Tickets are now on sale and will take place beginning on Friday, September 7 with 1 p.m. & 7 p.m. show times for a limited, one-week run. 

The recreation of “2001: A Space Odyssey” was completed under the supervision of film director Christopher Nolan, who was greatly influenced by the film and the work of Kubrick. To honor Nolan’s recent work, “The Dark Knight” will also be available for one week to accompany his restoration of “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Screenings of “The Dark Knight” also begin on September 7 and run throughout the week for a limited time.
