City of Carmel’s Martin Luther King Day celebration

Still looking for ways to celebrate MLK Day today?

Deidre Thornton , City of Carmel Mayor’s Advisory Commission on Human Relations, shares what the City of Carmel is up to!

  1. Event Details: Our third annual City of Carmel Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration will take place virtually this Monday, January 18th on various platforms at 6 p.m.
  2. Dee’s Intro: Dee Thornton is representing Mayor Brainard’s Advisory Commission on Human Relations and is the emcee for Monday’s virtual event. a. We had planned to be Livestreaming from the stage of the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts with no audience, but once Hamilton County turned to “Red”, we planned everything virtually under an intense time crunch so we would still be able to have this event. So many people made this possible and we are very thankful we can have such an important event in this time in history.
  3. Event Supporters: The City of Carmel is celebrating the important life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event is called The Beloved Community and we are very fortunate that so many community partners came together for this event. Mayor Brainard is a great supporter of this event and will make some remarks of his own as well. This program not only benefits our community, but also the United Negro College Fund. The City of Carmel is a big supporter of UNCF and there will be a link to donate to UNCF during our virtual program.
  4. Event performances by:
KJI Institute for the Arts and the artistry of very talented young people through the direction of Kimberly Janelle
Blair Clark and his daughter Erica Thompson sing the National Anthem
Actors Theatre of Indiana is performing their excerpt of Alabama Story. (Dee, please mention ATI was at Indy Style last week promoting this play)

There will also be representatives from the Carmel Interfaith Alliance and a proclamation for the National Day of Racial Healing, which is the day after MLK Day.
