Calling all Hoosiers! Enjoy a shared experience around film with the Indy Film Fest.

A number of critically acclaimed films mark the 15th annual Indy Film Fest lineup, including “Tully,” starring Charlize Theron, “RBG” and “The Long Dumb Road” from IU grad Hannah Fidell. April 26 is the opening night of the Indy Film Fest, celebrated with a screening of “Tully” and then an after party. “When We Grow Up,” written and produced by Grace Hannoy and made by an entirely female crew, will have its world premiere April 27th at the Indy Film Fest.

What is the Indy Film Fest?

The Indy Film Fest is a 10-day film festival in the spring. In its 15th year, the Fest seeks to champion movies that entertain, challenge and expand perspectives in Indianapolis and beyond.

What kind of films will there be?

Guests will enjoy numerous full-length and short films from filmmakers from around the globe. Genres cover a wide range including comedy, drama, animated, documentary and more. A full list of films and screening times is available on www.indyfilmfest.org.

This year, moviegoers will see many films with strong Indiana ties; that was a focus for the 15th year.

Event impact on the Indianapolis community:

Indianapolis is becoming the go-to destination in the Midwest for film. This event celebrates that and puts Indianapolis and the Indy Film Fest on the map. From April 26-May 6, hundreds of film critics, film lovers, and filmmakers will flock to Newfields to see more than 140 films, our largest Fest yet, that represent the best in traditional and independent film from around the world.

What can attendees expect?

The Fest is about much more than simply watching great films. In addition to more than 140 screenings, the Indy Film Fest provides entertainment of all kinds, including meet and greets with actors and filmmakers, and plenty of receptions and parties.

About some of the films:

The Fest kicks off on Thursday, April 26 with the opening night drama Tully, written by Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman — the team that created “Juno.” Academy-award winning actress Charlize Theron of “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Atomic Blonde” fame plays a struggling mother of three who forms a unique friendship with her babysitter, played by Mackenzie Davis (“Blade Runner 2049”).  After its premier, Tully was dubbed a “modern riff on ‘Mary Poppins.’”

The awards night film on April 28 will have moviegoers donning “dissent collars” with RBG.  Fest moviegoers get a special first look at 85-year-old United State Supreme Court Justice and unexpected pop culture icon Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s unique personal journey, legal legacy, courtroom fashion and workout routine. RBG is a revolutionary documentary with cameos from Gloria Steinem and Nina Totenberg.

Then the Fest will close on a comedic note on May 5 with a favorite from this year’s Sundance Film Festival, The Long Dumb Road. The film follows two men who accidentally meet when they are both facing personal, emotional intersections and they decide to embark on an unplanned road trip across the Southwest. The Long Dumb Road is directed by Indiana University graduate Hannah Fidell. Fidell is no stranger to the Indy Film Fest; she wrote and directed the 2011 short “We’re Glad You’re Here” about a rudderless twenty-something who moves back to her native Bloomington, Indiana from New York City.

What is “When We Grow Up”?

“When We Grow Up” is feature film made by an entirely female crew about a close-knit, albeit sometimes contentious, family brought together by an unconventional emergency that forces them to confront each other’s secrets, flaws, and temperamental inner children.

When can people see “When We Grow Up”?

“When We Grow Up” has its world premiere Friday, April 27th at 7:15 p.m. with an additional screening on Sunday, April 29th at 10:45 a.m.
