Fifty years ago, Wynne, whom the Washington Township Tennis Center is named after, organized the Indianapolis chapter of the National Junior Tennis League inspired by the ideals of her famous friend Arthur Ashe. She also served as honorary pall bearer for the tennis legend, Arthur Ashe Jr., who co-founded NJTL in 1969. Wynne began the tennis program with the vision that tennis can enhance one’s athletic ability, as well as one’s personal life.  Today the National Junior Tennis League of Indianapolis serves nearly 2,000 children in central Indiana each year by providing low-cost tennis, life-skills and healthy living instructions at more than 25 public parks, schools and indoor facilities. NJTL of Indianapolis has offered instruction to more than 60,000 youth during its existence.

Wynne has turned a community based tennis program and staff into one of the most sought out programs for elite junior players- so much so that families move to Indianapolis to play under her direction.

The program grew from her backyard court to the now 30 courts at North Central High School. Wynne brought tennis to inner-city parks of Indianapolis and in 2003, the Washington Township Tennis Foundation finish construction on a multi-million dollar renovation project for the tennis house. The facility was given the name, Barbara S. Wynne in honor of its founder. Wynne is an inductee into the Midwest Tennis Hall of Fame and a recipient of the International Tennis Hall of Fame’s Tennis Educational Merit Award.

What really makes Barbara Wynne incredible is that she has accomplished all of these because of her deep belief that providing youth tennis to all. Wynne brought tennis to inner-city parks of Indianapolis) teaches leadership, courage, goal setting, dignity, respect, hard work, perseverance, good sportsmanship, teamwork and the benefit of staying fit.

To continue this lifelong project Wynne is reaching out to the community for funding of the building (and operating) of a  Schmidt & Associates LEED  eight ( 8) court indoor tennis dome and educational facility on the property of North Central High School. Fortunately, many have already donated (including the Lily Foundation) to the goal of raising six million dollars.

The proposed tennis dome at North Central High School will be operated as part of the non-profit mission of the Indianapolis Community Tennis Program, which will ensure a lower-cost option for youths playing tennis throughout the winter, whether they participate in the elite training program or play recreational tennis.

Building the Domed Tennis Facility and Educational Community will continue the unprecedented tradition trend of producing fine young citizens of character as well as top-notch elite tennis players who bring credit to themselves and to the city of Indianapolis through their actions, successes and behavior on and off the court.

The Indianapolis Community Tennis Foundation is a 501C3 and all donations are tax deductible.
