Indiana Originals announces name change, why they changed it

Indiana Originals is excited to announce that they are changing their name to Indiana Owned! The change in name is a result of our expansion of membership. Mel McMahon, owner of Indiana Originals joined us today to share the reason behind the change and talk about what’s next for her brand. Here’s more from her:

When Indiana Originals launched in May of 2014, it was designed to support independent business owners that did not have the benefit of national brand recognition, logo design, turn-key sales programs, marketing assistance, website templates, buying power, etc. that being part of a franchise provides.

Franchises are a very important contributor to the economy in Indiana. As a result of the franchise business model, 16,506 local businesses provide 189,000 jobs to the Indiana economy and account for $14.5 billion of the state’s economic output, and $5.4 billion of private sector payroll. * Economic Impact of Franchised Businesses, Vol IV, Sept. 2016

Throughout 2020 and the pandemic, it has been brought to our attention that these Indiana franchise owners need our support and recognition, too. They are an imperative part of our mission to create healthier, stronger communities and more jobs in Indiana. We are pleased to announce that, as of September 15, 2021, Indiana franchise owners will be welcomed as members to “Indiana Owned.”

Franchise members will enjoy the same benefits as our current Indiana Originals members. Requirements for franchise membership include a registered business in Indiana, must not be an absentee owner, and must agree to support our mission. Through our search engine, consumers will be able to sort Originals and Franchise Friends so we can best help them find the type of business they are needing or wanting to support.

Who shows up in the search results? We call these local businesses our members. Our members are business owners who want you to know they live here, work here, and play here. They are the business owners donating food to shelters, sponsoring the little league teams, and employing hundreds of thousands of people in our state. Every business on IndianaOwned.com falls into one of two categories. They are either an “Original,” meaning the company is Indiana-owned and operated, headquartered here, and not part of an out-of-state chain, or they are a “Franchise Friend,” meaning the franchise is Indiana-owned and operated, the owner lives here in Indiana, and is engaged in our community.

Buying local is more than just a trend. It’s imperative for healthy, vibrant communities. Thriving communities are nurtured by local businesses. When dollars are spent locally, they are more likely to be recirculated locally, raising the overall level of economic activity, paying more salaries and building the local tax base. When you see the Indiana Owned badge, you know you are supporting a local business.

Be sure to subscribe and listen to “Local Matters” on the All Indiana Podcast Network made possible by Indiana.Gifts. Each week, Mel McMahon introduces us to a different Indiana Original or Franchise Friend. They talk about what it takes to get a business off the ground, the challenges and successes along the way, and why local businesses really matter to our communities.
