Indy Dog Whisperer: Understanding why dogs play, helping them get the most out of it

All dogs love to play, and Nathan Lowe, the Indy Dog Whisperer, joined us today to explain why and also how you can help them get the best out of that time.

1.  Understand Why Dogs Play

     – Fight practice

     – Hunt practice

     – Dogs won’t play unless they are comfortable

2.  Monitor Play Between Dogs

     – Interrupt play used for dominance

     – Watch for any dog showing discomfort

     –  “Referee” play

3.  Control Play With Humans

     –  No dominant play with children

     –  Focused play on your terms

     –  Rough play is OK once your rank is established

     –  Dogs shouldn’t demand play from you
