Four films open nationwide today, and The Film Yap’s Matthew Socey shares the details on each summer blockbuster: 

“BlackKklansman”

It’s the early 1970s, and Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) is the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Determined to make a name for himself, Stallworth bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. The young detective soon recruits a more seasoned colleague, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), into the undercover investigation of a lifetime. Together, they team up to take down the extremist hate group as the organization aims to sanitize its violent rhetoric to appeal to the mainstream. 

“The Meg”

A massive creature attacks a deep-sea submersible, leaving it disabled and trapping the crew at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. With time running out, rescue diver Jonas Taylor must save the crew and the ocean itself from an unimaginable threat — a 75-foot-long prehistoric shark known as the Megalodon.

“Slender Man”

In a small town in Massachusetts, a group of teenage girls perform a ritual in an attempt to debunk the lore of Slender Man (Javier Botet). When one of the girls goes mysteriously missing, they begin to suspect that she is, in fact, his latest victim. The girls attempt to investigate the mystery of the Slender Man, only to become haunted by the Slender Man themselves

“Dog Days”

Elizabeth is a charming anchorwoman who seeks advice from her dog’s therapist. Tara is a spunky barista who dreams of a life beyond the coffee shop. Daisy is a dog walker who’s enamored with a client. Garrett pines for a woman while trying to keep his adopt-a-dog business afloat. The beloved canines in their lives soon start to influence their careers, friendships and romantic relationships in funny and unexpected ways.
