A children’s classic is back in theaters, along with six other films opening locally.
The Film Yap’s Christopher Lloyd shares his take on this week’s new releases:
Dumbo — There’s nary a mote of faerie dust in this un-magical live action adaptation of the animated 1941 classic. Too much CBI and humans, not enough animal heart.
The Aftermath — Keira Knightley, Jason Clarke and Alexander Skarsgård star in a post-WWII love triangle set in Germany. Beautifully acted and so sad you’ll never want to love again.
Hotel Mumbai — This harrowing recreation of the 2008 terrorist attacks stars Dev Patel as a hotel staffer trying bravely to save the lives of his guests. With Armie Hammer.
The Hummingbird Project — Jesse Eisenberg and Alexander Skarsgård are a couple of young players in the high-frequency stock trading game who go up against their old boss (Salma Hayek).
The Beach Bum — Matthew McConaughey plays Moondog, a freewheeling stoner and wannabe writer in the latest from skeevy auteur Harmony Korine. With Snoop Dogg and Isla Fisher.
The Mustang — Matthias Schoenaerts plays a prison inmate who finds one last shot at redemption through the training of wild horses.
Unplanned — This faith-based drama looks at the true story of a Planned Parenthood director who changed her mind about abortion and joined the pro-life movement.
Aquaman — Jason Momoa can’t act his way out of a paper bag, but this giddy Flash-Gordon-meets-the-briny-deep superhero flick is undeniably fun. Stream It.
