The Film Yap reviews “The Favourite” and other releases for this weekend
Movie news!!
The Film Yap’s Christopher Lloyd runs down the list of “what’s playing.”
The Favourite — A roiling tale of deception, sex, twisted friendship and power set in the court of Queen Anne of Great Britain. Starring Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman, who should all get Oscar nominations.
Mortal Engines — This big, dopey but fun fantasy/sci-fi flick is set in a post-apocalyptic world where massive “traction cities” roll around the planet looting and pillaging.
Roma — 2018’s most overrated film is this effort from Alfonso Cuarón and is a semi-autobiographical tale about a family disintegrating in 1970s Mexico City. Plays out like home movies, with the same level of storytelling rigor.
Mary Queen of Scots — Margot Robbie and Saoirse play battling monarchs and cousins Elizabeth I and Mary Stuart as they vie for control of the British isles in this period costume drama.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse— This animated feature takes a Cuisinart to the Spider-Man mythology, killing off the original Peter Parker in favor of an Afro-Latino kid and a half-dozen other variations from parallel dimensions.
Vox Lux — Natalie Portman plays a Gaga-esque pop star in a film that examines her troubled relationship with her sister, her daughter and her manager (Jude Law).
The Mule — Since when do Clint Eastwood movies go unscreened for critics? He plays a 90-year-old war veteran smuggling millions in cocaine through the Heartland. With Bradley Cooper.
Smallfoot — Yetis aka Bigfoots are real and living in isolation, but think humans are the real monsters in this strictly-for-kiddies animation romp. Stream It.
