Racial Justice in Redistricting Campaign to hold virtual town hall Wednesday

Proposed maps for Indiana’s 9 congressional districts and 100 state House of Representative districts are scheduled to be released on Tuesday, September 14.

This month, the Indiana Citizen Education Foundation launched a Racial Justice in Redistricting Campaign with the theme, “Racial Justice Requires Fair Maps.”

On Wednesday, September 15 from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. there will be an hour long virtual town hall Live on WISHTV.com and the Indianapolis Recorder Facebook page.

Bill Moreau, co-founder of the Indiana Citizen Education Foundation and Publisher of The Indiana Citizen, joined us today to give us a breakdown of their organization’s biggest concerns about how legislators drew the new redistricting maps, how it can impact the community and more.

Here’s more from him:

The once-every-10 years process known as redistricting, after every Census, begins today, September 14th

Ten years ago, the Indiana legislature passed maps that one expert says are among the most gerrymandered in the country over a 50-year period.

The 2020 census shows that the racially diverse populations in Indiana are growing while the white population is decreasing. Yet only 10% of the Indiana House and Senate members are racially diverse.
