The Film Yap reviews Mission: Impossible, Eighth Grade, The Spy Who Dumped Me and more
Tom Cruise is back in Mission Impossible, three indie films, a popular animated show comes to the big screen, and a female budding comedy open in theaters this weekend. Chris Lloyd from The Film Yap breaks down this week’s new crop of films:
Mission: Impossible – Fallout
Tom Cruise again does big, expensive, impossible things in the sixth iteration of the superspy franchise. Big action scenes, lots of kerblooie action, just shift your brain into neutral and enjoy.
Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot
Joaquin Phoenix gives another engaging, twisty performance as John Callahan, a quadriplegic cartoonist whose offbeat humor delighted many and offended many.
Eighth Grade
Musician-turned-filmmaker Bo Burnham gives us this tender, cinema verite portrait of what it’s like to be a young girl in middle school. Because dads are SO embarrassing!
The Spy Who Dumped Me
Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon star as best friends who get caught up in international intrigue when one of them discovers her ex is a secret agent… maybe Tom Cruise?!?!?
Teen Titans Go! To the Movies
The children’s animated TV show featuring crudely drawn superheroes gets a feature length movie version, because I guess we deserve that.
Blindspotting
Racial tensions are explored in this dramedy about lifelong friends, one black, one white, with very different experiences living in Oakland.
Ready Player One
In the dystopian future, everyone spends most of their lives inside a giant video game, and now a war’s on. Entertaining and thoughtful. Buy It.
