Student receives Mozel Sanders Foundation scholarship

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Mozel Sanders Foundation extends further than its work providing food — scholarships are another major part of its work.

The scholarships are gifts recognizing those who think of others instead of just themselves.

Kenneth Franklin has something that isn’t often found in eighth graders: a passion to help others who are less fortunate.

“It makes me feel proud of myself that I am helping other people live like how I am living,” he said.

For at least five years, the Franklin family has given back by creating care packages and bags for people without a home. It’s that ‘give back’ spirit that helped the middle schooler snag the Mozel Sanders student empowerment scholarship.

Samantha Franklin is Kenneth Franklin’s mother and says his spirit of giving back comes from his roots.

“That’s something we do as a family quarterly. I have actually been working with Mozel Sanders Foundation as a volunteer since I was 17,” she said.

For years, his mother has served as an educator, helping line up others for the scholarship. She said it’s an honor seeing her son earn it this time.
