‘SpongeBob’ fans petition for tribute to late creator during Super Bowl halftime show
SAN FRANCISCO (WFLA) – Fans of “SpongeBob SquarePants” have launched a petition to pay tribute to its creator during the upcoming Super Bowl.
Stephen Hillenburg died last Monday of ALS. He was 57.
Days later, a Change.org petition began circulating on social media, asking to have the song “Sweet Victory” played in his honor during the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show.
“As a tribute to his legacy, his contributions to a generation of children, and to truly showcase the greatness of this song, we call for Sweet Victory to be performed at the Halftime Show,” the petition states.
There’s a meaning behind the special request.
In a SpongeBob SquarePants episode entitled “Band Geeks,” SpongeBob sings the song in front of a crowd at the Bubble Bowl, which is basically the show’s version of the Super Bowl.
The petition, started by Isreal Colunga, currently has more than 500,000 signatures.
Super Bowl 53 will be held in Atlanta Mercedes Benz Stadium on Feb. 3.
