Packaged calzones in recall may contain hard, clear plastic

WASHINGTON, July 17, 2018 – Packaged calzones shipped to stores nationally are being recalled,  the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said Tuesday.

Charlotte, N.C.- based Smithfield Packaged Meats Corp., doing business as Stefano Foods., recalled 24,048 pounds of pepperoni five-cheese calzones that may contain pieces of hard, sharp, clear plastic. The not-fully-cooked calzones were produced May 23. The calzone packages had “Lot Code 14318B” on the individual packages and “USE BY DATE 1/18/2019” on the product cases. The products bear establishment number “EST. M-19140” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Consumers contacted Stefano Foods about the problem, and the company notified federal authorities Monday. One consumer reported a small oral laceration during consumption of the product.

Consumers and retailers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
