Man dead after shooting at park basketball court on far-east side
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man in his 20s died Sunday after a shooting at a park basketball court on the city’s far-east side.
Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to the 10500 block of East 30th Street — to an address that corresponds to Grassy Creek Regional Park — around 6:40 p.m. Sunday on a report of a person shot.
They arrived to find a man who had been shot while on the basketball court, police at the scene said. The man, who has been identified as 26-year-old Marcel Chisholm, was critically injured and died on the way to the hospital, Maj. Kerry Buckner said at the scene.
“Although we had 150 people at the park, nobody saw anything. So we do know there was a basketball game. There was no argument during the game. We have no idea. I guess the game had ended; they were shaking hands, and somebody walked up with a gun and shot the individual that we found. We don’t know what the motive is. It doesn’t seem to be related to the game. And it’s warm out — we expected some of this to happen. We just didn’t expect it would be so quick,” Buckner said.
The circumstances of the shooting were immediately available.
Late Saturday night, less than a mile from the park, police responded to a residence where a man was found with an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
