1 dies in single-vehicle crash in Lawrence

LATEST: The Marion County Coroner’s Office had not responded by July 5, 2022, to a request from News 8 for the identification of the driver.

LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) — A driver died after a single-vehicle crash Wednesday night on Marion County’s northeast side.

Lawrence Police Department and emergency medical crews were sent shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday to the crash at East 71st Street and Lee Road. That’s in a forested area east of Fall Creek Road on the northeast corner of Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park.

Deputy Chief Gary Woodruff said the crash happened at the bottom of a hill where there’s a sharp turn. Instead of making the turn, the driver did not turn and the vehicle went into a utility pole, briefly knocking out power in the area. The driver was the only person in the vehicle.

Investigators initially believed speeding was a contributing factor, Woodruff said, and more investigation will help to determine the cause of the crash. Police will work to determine if the driver was impaired or wearing a seat belt.

No additional details were immediately available from authorities.
