JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WISH) – One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in southern Indiana Wednesday morning.

According to the Indiana State Police, just before 1 a.m., an ISP trooper pulled a vehicle over on Middle Road in Jeffersonville due to non-working tailights.

During the stop, police believe the female driver began having a medical issue and ambulances were called to the scene.

Also during the stop, the trooper continued talking to the vehicle’s male passenger, 27-year-old Malcolm Williams. The trooper believed Williams had supplied him with a fake name.

At one point during their exchange, Williams displayed and fired a handgun at the officer, according to ISP. The trooper returned fire, striking Williams, who was transported to a Louisville hospital. At the hospital, Williams was pronounced dead.

The driver was not injured and the trooper suffered only minor injuries.

The investigation into this deadly incident is underway.
